Gilts & government bonds

Image representing a stack of coins

In recent months we have seen a significant rise in the purchase of gilts, as investors increasingly consider the security of their assets.

Gilts are guaranteed by the government and therefore considered one of the safest investments that a UK investor could buy. Gilts are normally held for a fixed period of time and have a level of interest which is paid by way of biannual dividend and the dividends are fixed.

If you would like to find out more about gilts we have produced a free guide to gilts which you can download below.

You can buy and sell gilts through Hargreaves Lansdown in our Vantage Share Account, Vantage ISA, Vantage SIPP and in a Classic (certificated) share dealing account. Within an ISA you can only buy gilts with 5 years or more to run to redemption.

How to deal gilts

If you are familiar with gilts and how they work, you can place a deal in an existing HL account by calling our dealers on 0117 980 9800 during market hours (Mon-Fri, 8:00am-4.30pm). To buy and sell gilts within your Vantage account you will pay the same as you would pay if you are dealing shares.

If you wish to open a new account you can open a Vantage Share Account, Vantage ISA or Vantage SIPP online and then call our dealers on 0117 980 9800 during market hours (Mon-Fri, 8:00am-4.30pm) to place your deal.
