Global markets have remained under pressure with the problems of the financial sector and fears of a prolonged recession weighing on sentiment. The fund has underperformed over the last six months because of its holdings in the financial and resources sectors. That said James Fairweather believes the earnings of energy companies remains strong. The fund’s long term strategy remains in Asia and emerging markets where growth appears sustainable.

Investment experience: 29 years.
James spent three years with Montague Loebl Stanley & Co as an institutional sales and economics assistant before moving into eurobond sales with Kleinwort Benson. James joined Martin Currie in 1984 and has worked in our Far East, North America and continental Europe investment teams. He was appointed deputy chief investment officer in 1994 and chief investment officer in 1997. James is responsible for Martin Currie's investment strategy and process, and for the management of our global and global ex US equity strategies. He is a main board director and a member of Martin Currie's executive management committee.
