The fund's defensive stance in early 2009 meant that its performance lagged the sector. However, as Daniel Nickols slowly became more positive in his outlook, he introduced exposure to some economically sensitive companies which have staged a strong rally. Performance began to improve as a result. Currently, he is particularly keen on the oil, mining and technology sectors, which he expects to continue growing this year.

Daniel Nickols is the manager of the Old Mutual UK Select Smaller Companies Fund and works in OMAM's very successful, award winning UK Mid & Small Cap Equities team. The fund has a AAA rating from Standard & Poor's and OBSR. Prior to joining OMAM he was a small cap fund manager at Gerrard Investment Funds and Albert E Sharp.
