HL comment

Our view on this Fund

In our view equity income funds offer investors access to some of the highest quality companies in the UK. They offer attractive yields, and as these companies are currently undervalued compared with the rest of the market, they also offer the potential for capital growth should their worth be reappraised as the economy recovers. On the other hand, if recovery falters, their defensive qualities should also make them less vulnerable.

For investors who prefer to leave the fund selection to others, the HL Multi-Manager Income & Growth Portfolio Trust could be an excellent core holding. The fund aims to provide investors with access to a selection of what we believe are the finest fund managers in the UK. By bringing together complimentary styles the fund is able to capitalise on the best opportunities in the market. For those seeking a regular income the dividends are collected from the underlying funds and distributed to investors quarterly.

It's certainly not too late to take advantage of the potential offered by the equity income sector and I am confident the long-term returns from the HL Multi-Manager Income & Growth Portfolio Trust won’t leave you disappointed.

HL sector comment: UK Equity Income

Our view on this sector

There has been some disparity in strategy within the sector recently, with some funds being especially defensive and others more bullish. This has led to a marked difference in performance, with the defensively positioned funds lagging their more aggressively managed peers. With the economic outlook uncertain, we believe that this trend might be reversed in 2010. Dividends have been cut on many funds as the banking sector has largely stopped paying dividends, and other sectors have also seen profits and dividends falling. Despite this however, some funds have still managed to deliver positive income growth. We believe equity income funds should form the bedrock of most investors' portfolios, as they have the twin goals of growing income and capital.
