New fund launches

Our research analysts regularly scour the market for new investment opportunities, some of which are included in our Wealth 150 list of preferred funds for new investment, whilst with others we simply negotiate the best terms for you to invest. On many funds we can offer initial savings of up to 5.5% and annual loyalty bonuses of up to 0.5%. Here we display new and recent launches we can offer through the Vantage Service.

Legal & General Diversified Absolute Return Trust

In an environment which has been dominated by volatility and falling markets, Legal and General is launching the Diversified Absolute Return Fund with the aim to deliver positive returns every year.

This is not an ordinary fund that invests directly in the shares or bonds of companies. It extends beyond that by exposing itself to actual global commodities, money market instruments, stockmarket indices and sectors, currencies and interest rates for example. It will look to take advantage of movements in these assets by applying alternative investment tools such as ‘futures’ and other derivatives.

UBS US Growth

UBS is launching a new US Growth Fund, which will be managed by a team in the States known as Growth Investors. The team joined UBS in 1991 and began managing a fund with a distinctive ‘growth’ orientated strategy in 1998. This new fund will effectively be a mirror of the existing strategy.

Growth Investors’ philosophy is to invest in good quality, growing companies where they believe the market price underestimates the magnitude and duration of future growth.

Castlestone Aliquot Agriculture (UCITS) Fund

Castlestone is a boutique investment management firm which was initially founded as a family office in 1996 and then evolved to become an independent fund manager. The group’s focus has always been on offering a route into alternative investments that can complement traditional equity and bond portfolios.

This is their latest launch which offers exposure to agricultural commodities including grain, fibre, livestock, foodstuffs as well as alternative energy (including ethanol, soy oil and palm oil). What makes this fund different is that it has no actual exposure to the shares of agricultural companies; instead it has exposure to the commodities itself. While this makes it a highly specialist and higher risk fund, Castlestone believes it offers a low correlation to equities and bonds. It can therefore dovetail with more traditional assets. They also believe the fund can hedge against inflation as commodities have maintained their value over and above inflation over the long term. Although as seen recently, their value can fall as well as rise.

Pictet Timber (P GBP)

Pictet is still a relatively new company in the UK but it is well known for managing specialist funds, particularly those with an emphasis towards the environment. The company already manages thematic funds including biotechnology, water, and clean energy. The Timber Fund is the latest addition to their range.

The fund is managed by a team of three specialist and experienced individuals who aim to exploit the timber theme by investing in companies that own and/or manage forests and timberland. They believe that wood is a construction material that is coming back into vogue, particularly in terms of energy efficiency and its recyclability compared to other materials like concrete, bricks or steel.
