Our view on this Fund

Tim Steer aims to identify companies operating in a favourable operating environment and where news flow is positive. There is currently a bias in the defence sector in companies which have visible earnings. Another theme he favours are businesses whose earnings are being driven by the stronger growing emerging markets. While the fund has fallen in value it has held up better than many of its peers.

HL group comment: New Star

Our view on this Fund Management Group as a whole

The company entered the fund management industry in June 2000 led by John Duffield, the founder of Jupiter Asset Management. His marketing campaigns have certainly served the company well in the short space of time it has been around, as New Star has now become a major player in the UK Unit Trust market. With the takeover of some of Aberdeen funds in early 2003, followed by the acquisition of the Edinburgh Fund Managers and the purchase of Exeter funds later on in 2003, New Star now believes it is has the fund range to take on the largest players, and with the proven track record of their fund managers there is every reason to believe they will succeed. New Star floated on the stock market in 2005 and currently has a wide range of funds on offer ranging from Oeics, unit trusts, investment trusts and fund of funds. Mr Duffield is supported by a team of talented fund managers, who have an active interest in the business and from whom we expect outstanding returns over time.

HL sector comment: UK All Companies

Our view on this sector

The effects of the credit crunch have finally filtered into the real economy, despite this (and because of the high oil price for most of the year) BP recently posted record profits and a large dividend increase. Elsewhere the FTSE has been suffering huge volatility as banks and latterly mining companies have taken large tumbles. Recent Government intervention in the banking sector should hopefully unfreeze the plumbing in the financial world and provide the wider economy the chance to pull out of a recession.
